Liroo dam abutments leakage analysis using DFN-DEM hybrid method
Authors
Abstract:
The Liroo Dam is one of the largest concrete dams in the country under study. The objective is to investigate and estimate the amount of water leakage from joints and fractures in dam abutments using numerical method. Interconnected fractures are the main pathways of water flow into the abutments and control the rock hydraulic behavior. Considering the stochastic properties of the geometric parameters of the joints, especially the persistence of the joints, and the presentation of a more realistic model is essential for hydraulic analysis. Therefore, geometric model of discrete fractures network (DFN) was prepared in 3D using 3D-DFN written code. Finally, after validation of DFN model constructed with the extracted values, it is found that the average fit for the different geometrical components and the values of the joints intensities are over 90%. These results were used as reliable inputs of the geometrical model for modeling the hydraulic flow of the left and right abutments using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) in the UDEC software. The total leakage rate was calculated to be 135415 m3 / year. Compared to the useful volume of the reservoir, the total leakage from both supports comprises 0.03% of this useful volume.

Numerical probabilistic analysis for slope stability in fractured rock masses using DFN-DEM approach
Due to existence of uncertainties in input geometrical properties of fractures, there is not any unique solution for assessing the stability of slopes in jointed rock masses. Therefore, the necessity of applying probabilistic analysis in these cases is inevitable. In this study a probabilistic analysis procedure together with relevant algorithms are developed using Discrete Fracture Network-Dis...
full textRandomness Leakage in the KEM/DEM Framework
Recently, there have been many studies on constructing cryptographic primitives that are secure even if some secret information leaks. In this paper, we consider the problem of constructing public-key encryption schemes that are resilient to leaking the randomness used in the encryption algorithm. In particular, we consider the case in which publickey encryption schemes are constructed from the...
full textLeakage through Geosynthetic Dam Lining Systems
An experimental testing program was conducted to quantify leakage through a geomembrane liner system when subjected to high hydraulic heads. Leakage through geomembranes is mainly due to the presence of defects, which may occur during installation and operation. Previous studies focused on leakage through landfill liners (i.e., low hydraulic heads) have led to analytical models and simplified e...

This paper firstly described the dam break in the aspects of theories and models. Break parameters prediction, the understanding of dam break mechanics, peak outflow prediction were shown as the essential for the dam break analysis, and eventually determined the loss of the damages. Secondly, as an application example, Foster Joseph Sayers Dam break was further modeled and analyzed using USACE ...
full textStability analysis of support systems using a coupled FEM-DFN model (Case study: a diversion tunnel at Lorestan dam site, Iran)
Various structural discontinuities, which form a discrete fracture network, play a significant role in the failure conditions and stability of the rock masses around underground excavations. Several continuum numerical methods have been used to study the stability of underground excavations in jointed rock masses but only few of them can take into account the influence of the pre-existing natur...
